Critical treatment without hospital stay? Here’s why your medical expenses could still be covered

Understanding Day Care Procedures in Health Insurance

Hospitalization Rules
Most health insurance claims require 24-hour hospitalization. However, policies also cover:

  • OPD expenses (doctor visits, tests, medicines)

  • Day care procedures (no overnight stay needed)

Day Care vs OPD

  • Day care: Complex procedures (like cataract surgery) that previously needed hospitalization

  • OPD: Basic treatments (blood tests, consultations) never requiring hospitalization

Covered Procedures
Insurers specify which day care treatments they cover. Examples:

  • Dialysis

  • Chemotherapy

  • Cataract surgery

  • Tonsillectomies

Note: IRDAI’s Aarogya Sanjeevani policy covers all day care procedures.

Key Considerations

  1. Sub-limits: Many policies cap payouts (e.g., ₹25,000–1 lakh for cataract surgery)

  2. Exclusions: Cosmetic/dental treatments (unless reconstructive) typically aren’t covered

  3. Policy Wording: More procedures listed ≠ better coverage

Expert Tip
Focus on policy definitions rather than just the number of covered procedures. Some insurers group treatments broadly (e.g., “nose operations”), which may offer wider coverage.
